Saturday 12 October 2013 Kinlochleven to Fort William, Scotland

Last day on the West Highland Way
Connor and Karen from Utrecht, Netherlands, strolling past an abandoned home on the Lairigmor, “Great Pass” in Scots Gaelic.

I enjoyed walking and talking with many folks we met on the Way. But we were all startled when we were passed by motorcycles on the trail. They were very respectful riders, but when you haven’t really been near a motor vehicle in nearly a week, it is surprising! The trail is open in some sections to cycles. It was a prelude to the shock of arriving in Fort William, with its bustling High Street.

A view of Fort William in the Distance from Dun Deardail, an Iron Age fort about 2500 years old.

I have passed and crossed more fields of sheep on the Ridgeway and the West Highland Way than any other kind of critter, but they’ve always been silent. I figure you don’t need to see any more sheep photos, but I came upon an audio drama of a lamb separated from the ewe, and caught their conversation with my recorder. You can almost understand what they are saying, even if they are speaking Sheep Gaelic!

It was a lovely day, and I found I didn’t want the trail to end…but here is our completion picture on the High Street of Fort William. Troy and I celebrated by enjoying a hot plate of chips in a nearby pub. I also had a pint of good cider!

After being a good pub dog, Troy is happy in his usual spot at the end of my sleeping bag in the tent. He slept soundly each night, and sprang up each morning ready to go!
